Publishing Principles

The Oyster Encyclopedia is committed to producing accurate, fair, and well-sourced content about oysters. These are the principles that guide how we research, write, and publish.

Accuracy

Every encyclopedia entry, guide, and article is verified against credible sources — scientific publications, government databases (NOAA, FAO), industry reports, and direct interviews with growers, scientists, and chefs. When sources disagree, we acknowledge the disagreement.

If we publish something that turns out to be wrong, we correct it transparently and note the change.

Sourcing

Wherever possible we cite primary sources — academic papers, official harvest data, and direct field observation. Secondary sources are used to provide context, never as the sole basis for a claim.

Independence

Editorial decisions are not influenced by advertisers, affiliates, or commercial partners. Sponsored content is clearly labelled. Affiliate links are disclosed (see our Terms of Use).

Transparency

Authors are credited by name on every piece. Our ownership and funding information is published openly on this site. Any conflicts of interest are disclosed at the top of the relevant article.

Corrections

If you spot a factual error, please email mason@oysterencyclopedia.com. We will investigate, correct the record as quickly as we can, and add a correction note to the article so readers can see what changed and why.

Diversity of perspective

Oyster aquaculture spans the globe and many cultures. We consciously include perspectives from indigenous shellfish stewards, small-scale farmers, restoration biologists, and chefs from a wide range of backgrounds.
